City Ferry Concept

City Ferry Concept

A lightweight aluminium passenger ferry concept designed for electric-first operation, with hybrid or diesel propulsion alternatives.

Urban water transport has a problem and an opportunity: people want ferries that feel calm, safe, and pleasant—but cities also need low-noise, low-emission operations and fleets that can be adapted as routes and passenger profiles change. This concept was developed as a modern classic city ferry: a contemporary vessel that borrows the right proportions and restraint from historic passenger boats, while meeting today’s expectations for accessibility, comfort, and clean propulsion.

The platform is based on aluminium construction, supporting weight efficiency, durability, and straightforward lifecycle maintenance—especially relevant when packaging batteries and electric systems. The concept is propulsion-flexible: configured for full electric, but intentionally laid out so the same design can be adapted to hybrid or diesel power where charging infrastructure, duty cycles, or procurement realities demand it.

The exterior aims to look inevitable in a city context—clean surfaces, strong horizontals, and a confident sheerline—while keeping the boat friendly and approachable at the quay. A generous roof overhang and large glazing turn the passenger saloon into a bright, panoramic space by day, and a warm, lantern-like volume at night. Practical deck features (including solar panels, life rafts, and clear passenger flow) are integrated without cluttering the silhouette.

Instead of one fixed interior, the concept was developed with multiple fit-out directions to serve different operators and use-cases—without redesigning the whole vessel each time:

  • City: efficient everyday commuting with clear sightlines and robust, easy-clean materials.

  • Green: a botanical, nature-forward atmosphere using plants and warm material tones to create a calmer journey.

  • Lux: premium lounge/event configuration with modular seating for flexible group layouts.

  • Modular / Accessible: a more open arrangement with wider pathways and fewer seats for improved accessibility and spaciousness.

A ferry that belongs to the city: quiet, efficient, and adaptable—without losing the charm of classic proportions.

Across the variants, the layout supports real-world operational needs: wheelhouse forward, WC, a clear central passenger space, accessible entrance, and options like bike rack capacity—because city ferries only work when boarding is fast and the interior stays intuitive even at peak loads.
